Our Home
We can look at our home from many perspectives. Starting with just two, which do you resonate with more?
Top Down?
...or ground up?
or perhaps a little bit of both for a more holistic view?
Our home goes by many names:
Culturally, we've learned to take a top down approach to naming: Gaia (commonly known as Earth) in the wider sense of home; Turtle Island (commonly known as North America) in a somewhat more immediate sense; and finally, the The Chicago Region (known to the indigenous folx of this region as Zhigaagoong).
💡
The name “Zhigaagoong” (she-gah-goo) comes to us from the Anishinaabemowin language (commonly known as the Ojibwe language, an indigenous language of the Algonquian language family). It refers to the unceded Niswi-mishokdewinan (The Council of Three Fires) territory east of Michigan avenue in so-called Chicago.
