New year, new things + a fond farewell to sliding scale pricing.

New year, new things + a fond farewell to sliding scale pricing.
Evening self portrait after a long day in the apothecary.

Happy new year everyone! As an herbalist, I prefer to align my threshold moments with the fall and spring transitions, but there's always something about the arbitrary new year transition slapped right in the middle of winter that works for me too.

At the very least, it gives me a good reason to write a quick newsletter and share some new things for the year ahead.

First off, welcome to all my new subscribers who found us through my recent interview on the Herbs with Rosalee podcast!

So happy you're here. If you haven't yet, you can listen to the podcast below where I go on and on about one of my favorite native medicinal herbs, Pedicularis!

You can also watch the video interview here.

A fond farewell to sliding scale pricing

This was a hard decision to make, but after 5 years of offering our products at sliding scale, I've decided to phase out this offering. I hope to write a longer reflection about our ongoing experimentation with payment models and free offerings, but in short, we came to the conclusion that physical products are inherently challenging to offer at sliding scale due to labor costs, material costs, storage costs and the like, whereas sliding scale is far more possible with service-based offerings like classes and consultations.

Our hope is that by setting a clear price for First Curve products, we will be able to allocate more to our 'Community Fund', and provide more free & low-cost education and herbal consultation services, which is where I truly believe there is more impact in providing accessibility.

❤️
Our Community Fund is a dedicated savings account which is funded by setting aside a percentage of First Curve revenue. We use this fund to cover expenses related to our free herbal clinic, fulfill free product requests from indigenous folks, and provide scholarships or discounted prices for students who may not be able to afford the full cost of a course or program.

Lastly, and maybe most importantly, many of you know my wife Stef and I brought a little one into the world this year, and turns out, we have an immense and heart expanding love for our little Julian that really puts things into perspective. One thing that is abundantly clear now that I'm a father... I need to stop paying myself below minimum wage :)

We know many of you really appreciated the sliding scale pricing, so we're offering a New Year's Sale right now – everything in the shop is 25% off, which is essentially what the low end of the sliding scale used to be. The sale is now through Sunday, January 4th.

As always, you can save 15% on all products when purchasing as a recurring subscription, so there are always ways to save a little bit.

Finally, if you happen to be someone who really benefits from one of our products and relies on the sliding scale pricing, please reach out, we are more than happy to work out pricing on a case by case basis.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for staying along with us on our journey in treading the ever so thin line between making exceptionally high quality herbal products, doing our best to make them as accessible as possible, and ensuring the sustainability of our offerings by keeping the lights on!
