Graminoids and Forbs

Previous: Horticulture Terms

Both are considered herbaceous (non-woody) but carry easily distinguishable features that differentiate plants among certain plant families.

Graminoids

Graminoids are herbaceous plants with a grass-like morphology – typically having elongated culms (the aerial stem of a grass or sedge) with blade-like leaves.

Graminoids typically belong to the grass (Poaceae), sedge (Cyperaceae), and rush (Juncaceae) families.

Forbs

Two ways of looking at a forb:

  1. Any herbaceous plant without grass-like features
  2. Any herbaceous flowering plant that is not graminoid (grass-like)

Typically forbs are dicots with non-woody stems.

The plants most often referred to as forbs belong to dozens of plant families, excluding the graminoid families above.
